Kurt Russell‘s hard at work promoting The Hateful Eight tour, which recently saw sneaky journalist Jeffrey Wells veer off course and grill his subject on gun control. Now another topic has distracted the legendary Russell from his main mission of convincing the few of us who aren’t in line to see Quentin Tarantino‘s latest effort.
Russell can’t help but be in demand, and people are very curious about rumors that he’ll play Star-Lord’s dad in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel. Earlier this month, buzz began about how multiple individuals close to the film namedropped Russell all over the place. Marvel, Chris Pratt and James Gunn all kept things tight, yet talk persisted. Speaking to MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Russell gave a very frank (and hilarious) answer:
“I literally got a phone call two days ago about this, I’ve never seen Guardians of the Galaxy so I don’t know anything about it. Many times I’ve heard ‘That’s a really fun movie, a really good movie [with] great characters.’ I don’t know it! So, I didn’t realize that [Gunn] had written and directed it, but we talked to each other on the phone. And I just had to be honest and say, ‘Thank you for considering me, I have to read [the script], and I have to watch the [first] movie because I can’t bring anything for you [right now]. I’ve got nothing to offer here.”
So, Russell isn’t disinterested, but he simply has no bloody idea what happened in the first movie. He admits how “weird” it is that the media seems to know more than he does, and you gotta love that good, old-fashioned Russell honesty. The dude isn’t gratuitously gushing over a film in order to appeal to Marvel. He’s gonna take his time and carefully consider the role before making a split decision. When that happens, he’ll toss a tin can in the air, whip out his guns, and deal a belated, “Draw!”
