Given a recent report, we knew Britney Spears was going to be on James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke,” but perhaps it was impossible to tell just how adorably awkward she would be as a guest. In this new teaser, we see her sitting passenger side as James Corden navigates his way through Los Angeles traffic, late for work.
To mitigate the stress of being tardy, Corden turns to a relatable activity that most of us do while stuck in traffic, which is belt out early-aughts pop songs. On this car ride, he sings “Toxic,” originally sung by none other than his front-seat passenger.
Spears lip-syncs along with her driver during the teaser, perhaps in an effort to preserve her voice for the real deal, before the two discuss Spears’ role as a mother. Corden asks if she’s brought her sons to performances at her residency in Las Vegas, and after she says yes, he quips back, “I saw my mum, once, in her underwear…” Spears light-heartedly slaps him, but let’s hope she stands up for herself a bit more against that kind of slut-shaming in the rest of the clip.
The full “Carpool Karaoke” segment will air August 25. In the meantime, we look forward to Spears’ ninth album — she’s already dropped two tracks from it earlier this summer: “Private Show” which first appeared in an advertisement for Spears’ perfume of the same name, and “Make Me” featuring G-Eazy, which she’s slated to perform at the VMAs this Sunday.
