For the first time in 60 years, a team completed a rare 3-6-2 triple play. But this one had nothing to do with skill and everything to do with some boneheaded baserunning by the Blue Jays. After Ryan Goins grounded out to first, his teammate Ezequiel Carrera got caught in a rundown between third and home. While that was going on, another teammate, Kevin Pillar, made his way to third base.
All of this made for a confusing double tag by the Mariners.
Pillar is automatically out because he’s the trailing runner in this situation. If Carrera stays on the bag, all is well. The Mariners get a double play, and the Jays are still in the inning. But nope. For some bizarre reason (and perhaps some coaxing from the third base coach), Carrera steps off and is tagged out.
Oops.
As we mentioned before, the 3-6-2 triple play is as rare as it gets.

The Blue Jays went on to lose 6-5 in 10 innings. That triple play ultimately cost them the game.
