In 2000, Matt Groening named the 10 best episodes of The Simpsons. He selections were… unusual. There was no “Marge vs. the Monorail,” or “Last Exit to Springfield,” or “King Size Homer,” or so many other fan favorites. Instead, his top two were the contentious “Life on the Fast Lane” and “Bart the Daredevil,” a perfectly solid Season 2 episode. But you certainly wouldn’t use it as proof that The Simpsons is the greatest TV comedy of all-time.
The X-Files creator Chris Carter was also asked by EW to name his favorite episodes of his own show. There are some obvious selections — “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose” is required viewing not just for X-Files fans, but anyone who loves TV — but also a few unlikely picks, too.
Neither chose “The Springfield Files.” Here’s the full list.
1. “Pilot” (Season 1, Episode 1)
2. “Deep Throat” (Season 1, Episode 2)
3. “Beyond the Sea” (Season 1, Episode 13)
4. “The Erlenmeyer Flask” (Season 1, Episode 24)
5. “The Host” (Season 2, Episode 2)
6. “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose” (Season 3, Episode 4)
7. “Memento Mori” (Season 4, Episode 14)
8. “Post-Modern Prometheus” (Season 5, Episode 5)
9. “Bad Blood” (Season 5, Episode 12)
10. “Milagro” (Season 6, Episode 18)
Where’s “Jose Chung’s ‘From Outer Space’?” Or “Home?” Or “Drive?” All creators should be required to list their show’s best episodes, so we can tell them how wrong they are.
