The folks behind How I Met Your Dad, the CBS spin-off to How I Met Your Mother, have cast indie darling Greta Gerwig in the lead role. But she won’t just stop at acting according to Vulture:
Greta Gerwig has signed on to play the titular “I” role in CBS’s How I Met Your Mother kinda-sorta-spinoff How I Met Your Dad. Not only that, but Gerwig will also be a producer on the project and is expected to be one of the show’s writers.
So is CBS going to go hard into mumblecore territory now? I can’t say any of this would be bad and that’s coming from someone who grew tired of HIMYM a few seasons ago. Gerwig at the helm is leaps and bounds better than Ted Mosby, but she could easily be trumped by a bad supporting cast.
The toughest shoes to fill will obviously be Neil Patrick Harris’ Barney Stinson, arguably the only reason a lot of people watch the show in the first place. So it remains to be seen if Father will be worth a watch or be a dead on arrival spin-off, but this casting is a step in the right direction. Here’s the character description:
Gerwig will play Sally, a character being described by the show’s producers as “a female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she’s going in life.” At the show’s start, Sally is facing the end of her one-year marriage, turning to a close circle of friends to help with the pending breakup. Interesting to go with the failed marriage plot device. I think this resonates with a lot of folks my age because it seems like we’re getting married and then chewing our arms off to get out of marriage almost immediately. Or at least that’s what it’s like from my experience.
She was the equivalent of a trucker whore, but I loved her once upon a time. Sit down kids, let me tell you how I met my eighteenth wife.
