In the day since his arrest and televised confession, the situation for Robert Durst has not improved. Now, on top of the arrest for the murder of Susan Berman, he may also face local charges in New Orleans for having a .38-caliber handgun in his hotel room. While local authorities consider these charges, Durst’s extradition back to California has been delayed.
Durst was in possession of a revolver when FBI agents arrested him, according to court documents, which also said he was considered a flight risk and classified as “armed and dangerous.” An agent noted that when detained at the JW Marriott, he had a .38 revolver in his possession.
Wearing an orange jail suit, Durst appeared before Orleans Parish Magistrate Judge Harry Cantrell Jr. on Monday morning. Asked by the judge if he waived his right to extradition to California, Durst, with hands shackled, said a simple “yes.”
Of the extradition order, Durst said, “Yes, I signed it, your honor.”
“I’m handing this to the officer and he’s going to notify California,” Cantrell told Durst.
Local authorities believed him to be “armed and dangerous” as well as a flight risk.
Despite the recorded confession, Durst’s attorney maintains his client’s innocence.
“Bob Durst didn’t kill Susan Berman and he’s ready to end all the rumor and speculation,”DeGuerin said.
“We’re frustrated because the local authorities are considering filing charges on him here and holding him here,” he said.
At least no one can blame his confession or gun possession on faulty contact lenses.
