Great news for those of us counting down the days until the AMC spin-off Fear the Walking Dead becomes a real, live, undead reality: The show has officially begun production! To mark the occasion, the producers of the show (Greg Nicotero, Gale Anne Hurd, showrunner Dave Erickson, and creator of The Walking Dead Robert Kirkman), have released a new video with some details about what to expect. We already knew that the show is set in Los Angeles and that it will take place at the beginning of the outbreak that caused the zombie pandemic. But what else?

Basically, if you’re expecting something a lot like the Walking Dead we’ve been watching for five seasons, you can stop right there. It’s intended to be a departure from the original series, and considering the time frame, that makes a lot of sense. Erickson says that the zombie world has tons of story from which to draw, so Fear the Walking Dead will mine from different sources. He said: “You expect a certain of thing of The Walking Dead. We want to give that sense and then pull the rug out from under them.” And Hurd reiterates that the setting and the story will give off “a completely different vibe, completely different feel.” But Kirkman really sells it as an independent entity, saying that you don’t even have to be a casual viewer of The Walking Dead to enjoy the new show.

Not much is seen in the video released by AMC, but, if anything, it shows how enthusiastic the creators are about Fear the Walking Dead. Maybe this isn’t just a money grab, and maybe we’ve got something really cool in store. (Maybe because they got bored by the show they’ve been making? Just a thought.)
