The best TV series you aren’t watching is coming to an end at NBC. TVLine is now reporting The Peacock has canceled Hannibal. The show’s third season premiered a few weeks ago and since its return to the small screen, ratings have been a bit lackluster, to say the least.
With the news that showrunner Bryan Fuller is hopping on board the TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, fans began speculating that the series inspired by Thomas Harris’ novels will not be continuing. Still, Fuller had nothing but kind words for the network which took a big chance on the series that still pushes all sorts of boundaries of what can be shown on broadcast TV:
“NBC has allowed us to craft a television series that no other broadcast network would have dared, and kept us on the air for three seasons despite Cancellation Bear Chow ratings and images that would have shredded the eyeballs of lesser Standards & Practices enforcers,” Fuller said in a statement. “[NBC president] Jen Salke and her team have been fantastic partners and creatively supportive beyond measure.
NBC will air the remainder of Hannibal‘s third season, which is slated to conclude in August. Whether a streaming service shows any interest in rescuing the series for a fourth season remains to be seen. However it’s worth noting how voracious those Fannibals can be and, hey, if The Mindy Project can be picked up by Hulu, anything is possible.
