During last year’s SDCC press room for Hannibal, Bryan Fuller was posed a question about the possibility of bringing the storyline for the recently canceled series into Silence of the Lambs territory. He was coy with his response but did express some interest having Jodie Foster involved in some capacity.
Since MGM owns the rights to the characters from the 1991 movie, things can become a bit muddled when attempting to introduce the likes of Clarice Starling to the small-screen. However, while attending Thursday night’s Saturn Awards, Fuller jokingly expanded on the sentiment by telling Vulture a character named “Schmarice Schmarling” can always be introduced to the story canon.
What’s intriguing, though, is Jodie Foster was invited to direct a future episode of the series:
“I’ve asked Schmodie Schmoster if she wanted to direct an episode, because she’s a brilliant director,” he said. “But that’s the only conversation I’ve had with Schmodie Schmoster.”
Fuller went on to express a deep interest in bringing the Buffalo Bill story to the show, saying, “I want to tell the Buffalo Bill story in a way that hasn’t been told before.” Hell, he’s succeeded in doing that with Hannibal Lecter so why not?!
Before the night was over, Hannibal ended up taking home the Saturn Award for Best Network TV series. Word is still out on whether the show will live on — or where it may end up — but if a fourth season does happen, all signs are pointing to the series ending up on Amazon. The show will still have a presence at San Diego Comic Con in two weeks so here’s hoping we’ll have more details on the show’s possible future soon.
