All good things must come to an end. While it has been rumored for a while, Jenna Coleman has announced that she is leaving Doctor Who (which had its season premiere on BBC America tonight) at some point during the upcoming ninth season. Coleman made it official yesterday on Radio 1:
“I have left the Tardis,” she said. “It’s happened. I’ve filmed my last scenes.”
Coleman joined the show as Clara in 2012 and has become the longest running companion since the 2005 reboot. While it took fans a while to warm to her after the departure of the beloved Ponds, she proved herself to be a wonderful addition to the show, sparring admirably with both the eleventh and twelfth Doctor. Coleman promises that Clara’s last ride in the Tardis will be “a really good story”, and that leaving the show has left her understandably emotional.
“There’s not a lot of jobs where you get to go to work and have an alien as your best mate and get to run away from monsters… it’s been really special. I did get emotional. I was really trying to fight against it but you can’t help it. It’s been part of my life for the past three years and I just love Peter so much… I shed a tear.”
Fans will have to wait and see how it all shakes out, but hopefully Steven Moffat has written her an exit worthy of the mark that she left on the show.
