Stephen Colbert kept things about as traditional as possible during the opening of his first night on The Late Show. The opening of the show featured a classic rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner with a few special guests (one in particular seems to be taking retirement pretty well). Then he moved into the old school talk show monologue segment, with a few jokes that you might’ve heard on Letterman and other talk shows in the past.
But there was something a little different to come and you could tell it wouldn’t just be your typical late night experience around when Les Moonves makes an appearance in the front row and aids in some jokes about CBS’ practice of showing The Mentalist ahead of Colbert’s arrival on the network (surely still a pleasing sight for James Corden).
The threat of switching directly back to an in-progress episode of The Mentalist loomed, but I doubt they’ll need that. The monologue was clearly the hump for Colbert to jump over and the rest of show played like common, high quality ground for the comedy vet.
