One day after Netflix paid $50 million for Bong Joon-Ho’s new monster movie, it was announced that the director’s last film, Snowpiercer, is being turned into a television show. It’s good to be Bong.
The 2013 Korean science-fiction/action/thriller/dystopian comedy (I dunno about you, but I found “size 10 chaos” pretty funny) set aboard a train was released in the United States last year, and became an immediate hit. It was Uproxx’s third favorite movie of 2014, largely because of Tilda Swinton’s teeth, and more than doubled its budget at the box office. Snowpiercer doesn’t seem like the most obvious movie to adapt into a TV show (hopefully it’s more Fargo than Minority Report), but Bong has signed on as an executive producer and the script will be written by Josh Friedman, who did fine work on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. No network is attached yet.
“I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity,” Friedman said. “I’m a huge fan of director Bong’s films, especially Snowpiercer. It’s great the way the best sci-fi is great — thoughtful, political, funny, scary and sly. And it’s on a train. A big f*cking train. What more could you want?” (Via)
Well, I’m sold. Speaking of sales: The show’s baby budget needs to be huge.
