It’s easy to view Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as the redheaded stepchild of the Marvel Universe. People really only watch it to get a little extra context for the movies, and it certainly doesn’t have the accolades of Jessica Jones or Daredevil, or even Agent Carter. However, as this week’s Honest Trailer points out, that isn’t really a fair characterization, given the strict parameters that they’ve been thrown by Marvel.
With the initial premise shot to hell in the first season and budgetary restraints that keeps Avenger cameos to name-drops only, it really isn’t fair to place the blame squarely on the shoulders of the cast and crew. And it really is getting better! Is anyone still watching, though? The Inhuman stuff has been pretty cool, so maybe it’s worth a second (or third) shot.
However, addressing Brett Dalton’s Agent Ward as “Dry White Toast” is truly a thing of beauty. You gotta hand it to S.H.I.E.L.D.; they’ve certainly subverted the “Blandly Handsome White Guy Is The Hero” trope on a number of occasions. Now if only they could learn from The Walking Dead‘s unfortunate habit of cycling out the black guy to make room for another. Really, there can be more than one.
