The season six premiere of the FX anthology American Horror Story is just over a month away, yet we still have no clue as to what the theme will be. In the past FX has hyped each seasons theme beforehand, making it abundantly clear what direction the upcoming season would be headed, but not so in advance of the September 14 premiere.
Prior season titles of ‘Murder House,’ ‘Asylum,’ ‘Coven,’ ‘Hotel’ and ‘Freak Show’ were announced well in advance, but as of today even the show’s Wikipedia page plainly lists the upcoming episodes as ‘season six.’ According to FX CEO John Landgraf, the lack of information is not an oversight, it’s by design:
“Every year, we lay out the themes and the new genre Ryan (Murphy) is going to be approaching; we thought it’d be fun [this year] to keep it a mystery — so we are.”
Not only has FX decided to play coy with the theme of this season of AHS, but they are actively trying to throw you off the scent by releasing multiple trailers that may or may not just be screwing with you.
“There are many more trailers than you’ve actually seen for hypothetical seasons of American Horror Story — different genres, different places,” Landgraf said of the season-six campaign. “One of them is accurate; the others are all misdirects.”
Here’s what we do know about season six; past series stars Angela Bassett, Cheyenne Jackson and Lady Gaga are all confirmed to be returning at some point, and according to FX show runners, this will not be the last season of the show.
The good news for American Horror Story fans that are feeling a little restless is the wait is almost over; we’ll all find out together what the season six theme is when the new season premieres Sept. 14 at 10 p.m.
