Earlier this month FX CEO John Landgraf told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that the teasers for season six of American Horror Story would be for hypothetical seasons with different genres and different places, and that only “one of them is accurate; the others are all misdirects.” The network has now released a whopping 17 teasers for the upcoming season, including the most recent, above.
“The Lesson” decidedly has a Children of the Corn theme going on, featuring a handful of creepy-looking kids pounding on desks in the middle of a cornfield; but also an alien theme, because at the very end all the kids necks suddenly snap upwards toward a bright light coming from the sky. In a quick freeze frame, you can see that the main kid’s eyes have now turned black.
So here’s the thing. Out of the 17 teasers so far (and counting), six of them have had related themes of children, aliens, and cornfields, while the other 11 have been just random creepy imagery like a spider coming out of a lady’s mouth or a CGI monster crawling on a set of train tracks. I guess what I’m saying here is: Was John Landgraf pulling our leg here? It seems like this theme might actually be hiding in plain sight.
For one thing, the only things we know for sure about season six are that it will feature “elements of children” in some way, and leaked set photos depict colonial times, which would very much tie into the cornfield imagery.
Also, there’s this:
FX also unveiled a sweepstakes contest this week allowing viewers to guess which of the teasers “will be represented in the premiere episode,” including one of the aforementioned alien teasers. Either way, I can’t say it hasn’t been fun trying to guess!
