The CW may have the most shows from DC Comics, but Fox is close behind. In fact, Monday is DC Night on Fox, with Gotham and Lucifer back to back. And Fox is looking for even more DC action, having just committed to shoot a pilot with Black Lightning.
Black Lightning follows Jefferson Pierce, teacher and former superhero who ditched the tights for the classroom deciding he could do more good as an educator. But his daughter, who has superpowers herself, wants to go out and beat up bad guys, and the combination of father-daughter bonding and being able to deal with the social problems affecting his school lures him back into the stretchy pants.
The show comes from The Game and Being Mary Jane‘s Mara Brock Akil, and it offers another take on the superhero series DC’s so good at putting on the airwaves. What’s especially attention-getting is how quickly it got snapped up; the show was announced as being shopped around only last week. It’s perhaps a testament to how well its comics-based shows are doing for Fox that they’re willing to give it a pilot, but, of course, a pilot isn’t a series. We’ll see if Lightning strikes probably sometime in 2017.
