There are few women more committed to smoking weed and talking about smoking weed than Broad City‘s Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson. These two are the High (sorry) Priestesses of Pot, the Green Goddesses, the Yas Kweens of Kush. Which is why it’s completely appropriate that Comedy Central — in addition to renewing Broad City for both a fourth and fifth season — has greenlit (…sorry) another weed-centric series from Glazer entitled Time Traveling Bong.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Time Traveling Bong will be a series about — wait for it — a bong, “or water pipe, if you prefer,” that is capable of traveling through time. Glazer conceived of the series with Broad City writers Lucia Anello and Paul Downs, who are currently writing the “female-led” 21 Jump Street and recently sold the script for the Scarlett Johansson-starring dead-stripper comedy Move That Body. (Downs also plays Abbi’s indefatigable Soulstice boss Trey on Broad City.)
Glazer and Downs appear to have visited the realm of the time-traveling ganj apparatus before; in the spirit of Time Traveling Bong, let’s briefly travel back in time to 2012, a simpler, gentler cultural moment:
On the forthcoming Time Traveling Bong — not to be confused with the above version of Time Traveling Bong, though they likely inform one another and draw from the same dank well — Downs and Glazer will play two cousins who discover said time-traveling bong and “ride high as they blaze through time.” Lest your mother worry this is merely a show encouraging rampant weed-smoking in the name of spurious scientific breakthroughs, tell her to fear not: Lessons will be learned on Time Traveling Bong. Wisdom shall be bestowed. EW adds that the pair’s “buzz is killed when the bong breaks and the cousins are forced to bounce around the space time continuum, learning to appreciate there’s no time like the present.”
“Yes,” adds EW‘s James Hibberd, “we asked a Comedy Central rep if this is all real and it is.” “No comment,” added Glazer, Downs and Aniello in an official statement.
Time Traveling Bong will be a limited series, lasting only three episodes, likely because high people can’t pay attention to a single plotline for much longer than 90 minutes. Naturally, the series will premiere April 20 on Comedy Central, then roll out its remaining episodes on April 21 and 22.
Broad City‘s third season will hit the same network on February 17, and its just-announced fourth and fifth seasons will premiere in the coming years. Be sure to stock up on your herb in advance.
