It was a wild day for fans of Constantine on NBC, all four of them (myself included). It’s a show that’s definitely riding a thin line against cancellation, and the prospects of it moving to another network looked grim after a possible move to SyFy turned out to be a rumor. Then earlier today, the word reportedly came down via sources at NBC: Constantine was dead.
Kate Aurthur posted a rundown on the status of shows at each network, featuring Constantine under the canceled section for NBC. Some questioned it, but she took to Twitter to confirm her reporting:
#Constantine fans: I factchecked my renewals/cancellations/bubble post with each network. http://t.co/VHllpQqirp pic.twitter.com/JJdqWedi7B

It’s not really a shock and the heads at NBC were talking about their disappointments with the show way back in January. From SlashFilm:
NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke has been frank about her disappointment in the show’s performance. “We wish the show would’ve done better live…”
Chairman Robert Greenblatt added, “We got on the comic books bandwagon. Maybe there are too many of them.”
But then a twist appeared! The death of NBC’s odd, but fun DC Comics adaptation was reportedly pre-mature. Aurthur updated her original posting and took to Twitter once again to shout to the masses:
#Constantine faithful, my source at NBC tells me your show is still awaiting news. We'll see! http://t.co/psq8C9ohIr pic.twitter.com/F3igSu5CeD

So yeah, it’s not completely dead yet. Does that mean the show isn’t going to be canceled? Not at all. I don’t hold out a lot of hope for the show reappearing on the main NBC network. This bit of news does make me think it might find a home somewhere else. I don’t think it has the following to warrant some painful decision making, so I lean towards the network hoping that someone (Netflix) swoops in (Amazon) to capture it for another season (Walmart in-store television).
It’s an interesting show, but the bar has been raised by Daredevil. Constantine deserves an adaptation like that, so I can only hope it gets that sort of injection if it does stick around.
