Netflix and Marvel were both on hand for the New York Comic Con, showcasing the new season of Daredevil and the first episode of Jessica Jones. We’ll have more on the latter a bit later, mostly because Daredevil gave the smallest of teases for season two. Teases that featured The Punisher and Elektra.
The folks in attendance got a look at a fine sizzle reel for season one of the series, followed by a short look at some scenes for season two.
According to Variety, the look is very quick, but provides quite a lot of excitement:
“Guilt can be a good thing,” Father Lantom tells him, since it’s a way of telling a person that they “still have work to do.” The footage then cuts to quick shots of Matt in full Daredevil costume descending a stairwell; Foggy flanked by cops; new cast addition Elekra (Elodie Yung) pulling a fabric mask across the lower half of her face; Karen looking at an x-ray of a skull that looks suspiciously like The Punisher’s symbol; and Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), aka The Punisher, walking down a hospital corridor with a gun in hand as his voice ominously intones, “Beg.”
You can catch those quick glimpses, but obviously it is a little hard to see within the leak. I’ve tried to “enhance” the look a bit here, but it’s still quite difficult. Hopefully this will be part of an upcoming trailer of some sort.
The cast joined Marvel head of TV Jeph Loeb on the stage, including The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and Elektra (Elodie Yung). Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez also joined the crew on the stage, explaining how they hope to keep the spirit that Steven DeKnight and Drew Goddard created in season one, while expanding the show into different places:
[The] enthusiastic fan response for “Daredevil” season one helped reassure them that there was an appetite for “dark, gritty, sophisticated content.” They’ll push the envelope even further in season two — “you wanted grounded, you wanted dark, here’s Elektra, here’s Punisher,” Ramirez laughed.
“We love two things: one of them is Matt Murdock, and the other is the world that Matt Murdock navigates,” Petrie added. “Last year, Steven [DeKnight] and Drew [Goddard] did a great job of introducing that world… This year, we get to test that world, take it further, [make it] darker, more emotional.”
Personally, I never thought Tom Jane’s version of The Punisher was too far off from the source material. That’s coming from a place where the competition is Dolph Lundgren and a sloppy sequel. The idea that we’ll get some real competition from Bernthal’s version is exciting. Not to mention that we still have all the parts that made Daredevil’s first season such a success still hopping around and cracking bones in the shadows. Should be a good time.
