Fans of Breaking Bad and now Better Call Saul probably see veteran character actor Jonathan Banks’s Mike Ehrmantraut in their sleep. He’s a scary dude in a taciturn yet menacing way. So it may not come as much of a surprise that if you see Banks somewhere out in public, and you look at him funny, you’re probably gonna get a little bit frightened.
At this weekend’s Vulture Festival, Banks’s Better Call Saul co-star Rhea Seehorn explained that’s not exactly the case. In fact, she explained, Banks actually welcomes conversation, where some of his other co-stars may appear on the sheepish side.
“While Bob [Odenkirk] can be pleasantly surprised by the fans and shy at times to accept the attention, Jonathan is like, ‘Get back over here and talk to me! What are you doing?’ He wants to talk to everybody. He’s like your favorite weird uncle at every barbecue.”
Seehorn also pointed out that if you see Banks in public, don’t just kind of gawk at him, engage him. “He doesn’t like being looked at by fans, like stared at without them saying something,” she said. “So you’ll often be eating with him and people will like be at the outside table thinking they’re being covert and he will get up and be like, “If you’re going to stare at me, talk to me!”
See, this is just another example of celebrities being just like us. They may both play and look like steely, cold-blooded characters, but in reality, all they want to do is have a nice, casual chat.
