This is a screencap from a preview clip for Yo: The Story of Yo! MTV Raps, a VH1 Rock Doc airing tonight that I am going to watch so hard my eyes will bleed. The clip features the show’s hosts, Ed Lover and Doctor Dre, hanging out with Mike Tyson and Don King at Tyson’s mansion. A bunch of stuff happens, and you are free to watch and discuss it all if you like, but I would just like you to take a moment to look at what Mike Tyson is wearing. That outfit is so ’90s that I bet it came with a hypercolor tank top and five free slap bracelets.
Now that I think about it, I imagine Mike Tyson had a really hard time getting an honest appraisal of his wardrobe back then. He was the baddest man on the planet by a substantial margin, and he was surrounded by yes men who were all on his payroll. He could have showed up at a funeral wearing rollerblades and a lime green Hefty bag with holes cut out for his arms and legs, and I bet most people would have just said “Looking good as always, Mike” in an effort to avoid ending up in the poor house or the hospital. What I’m getting at here is that, considering the circumstances, white overall short shorts with no shirt on underneath and a floppy blue baseball hat was actually a pretty reasonable get-up.
