Actor David Thewlis’ body of work includes nominated and award-winning performances in films like Naked and The Theory of Everything, but he’ll forever be remembered as the Harry Potter film series’ Remus Lupin. This isn’t a terrible thing to be famous for, but all of that’s about to change now that Thewlis has been cast in the upcoming third season of Noah Hawley’s Fargo. Why? Because as previous casting announcements for Ewan McGregor and Carrie Coon have proven, Hawley has a penchant for giving these new characters wonderfully silly names. Hence why Thewlis will forever be known as “V.M. Vargas.”
According to Entertainment Weekly, Thewlis will play “a mysterious loner and true capitalist who delivers Emmit (Ewan McGregor), the Parking Lot King of Minnesota, the bad news that he has just become partners with his employers, whose business interests lay outside the law.” What’s more, this “loner” and “capitalist” will go by the name V.M. Vargas, which is absolutely wonderful. And combined with McGregor’s non-twin siblings Emmit and Ray Stussy, Coon’s Chief Gloria Burgle and Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Nikki Swango, Thewlis’ character nearly completes Hawley’s forthcoming masterpiece.
Fargo‘s third season, which is set in 2010 a few years after the events of season one (and a few decades after season two), isn’t expected to premiere until spring 2017. Until then, fans will just have to imagine what David Thewlis’ V.M. Vargas’ message for Emmit will entail.
