Fox’s Gotham really went all-out with the villains during its second season, adding Hugo Strange, Mr. Freeze, and more to its ever-expanding cast, and season 3 will add even more bad guys to the mix. It was teased during season 2, but Deadline now confirms that Gotham season 3 will feature The Mad Hatter, who will be played by The Walking Dead alum Benedict Samuel.
Walking Dead viewers will recognize Samuel as a key member of The Wolves, a gang that terrorized Rick’s group during the first half of season 6. Owen was a relatively minor villain in the bigger Walking Dead scheme, but he left an impression, and it will be interesting to see what he does with the much more whimsical Mad Hatter.
In the comics, The Mad Hatter is one of Batman’s many Alice in Wonderland-inspired enemies, whose schemes usually involve some sort of mind control. Fox describes the Gotham version of Mad Hatter, like so:
“Jervis Tetch is a talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness. He arrives in Gotham with an unwavering desire to find his sister, Alice, a young woman who went missing in the city years ago. It is anyone’s guess just how far down the rabbit hole he’s willing to go in order to find her.”
Mad Hatter has always been a fan favorite among Batman baddies, but it’ll be interesting to see how he translates to the gritty Gotham universe and how fans react to any possible changes to the character. We’ll find out when Gotham season 3 returns on September 19.
