Less than a month after its premiere, HBO announced their decision to renew Ballers for a second season. The same, however, cannot be said for its Sunday night comedy companion The Brink.
After the network put in a weeklong extension on cast contracts, Deadline is reporting the Jack Black/Tim Robbins comedy will return for another season but — even though they rushed to order the series earlier this year — HBO waited until the last possible moment to order more episodes:
The Brink, whose road to HBO’s schedule started with an email to [Jerry] Weintraub containing the script by former Weeds executive producer Roberto Benabib and his brother Kim Benabib, took only four to five months from that day until the project received a series greenlight in February 2014 — an unusually quick turnaround. “They don’t know how long I’m going to live, that’s why they picked it up so quickly,” Weintraub quipped at the time.
The decision to order new episodes of the political dark comedy comes two weeks after the passing of executive producer Weintraub. His death and the recent uptick in the show’s dismal ratings — Sunday’s episode brought in 1.06 million viewers — may have also been an influence in HBO’s last minute renewal announcement.
