All personal politics aside, we should appreciate that Hillary Clinton, the potential next president of the United States of America, is spending the months leading up to the election talking to Amy Poehler about Leslie Knope, a fictional character on Parks and Recreation. This is also what a lot of people think is wrong with U.S. politics today, that the candidates are so interested in coming across as “cool,” or whatever the hell Ted Cruz was doing with that Simpsons impressions video, that they’re not talking about The Real Issues.
Not me, though. Being president seems like a horrible job — you don’t get paid enough, at least half the country hates you, and you leave the White House looking tired and broken. (That would immediately happen to President Knope, according to Poehler, who told Clinton that “she would run out of gas really fast.”) One of the few perks? Chilling with aliens 24/7 at Area 51, but also, getting to talk about whatever you want with whoever you want. David Chase on The Sopranos finale? Fly him in! Debbie Harry about the recording of Parallel Lines? Why not! The cast of Parks and Rec to reenact the entire “Andy and April’s Fancy Party” episode? That’s the first thing I’d do.
Plus, Game of Thrones screeners. Maybe being president isn’t so bad.
