The January sun is ready to crest over the horizon, which means that you’ll be busy working on your New Year’s resolutions. What better way to get your mind off the motorized wheel at the gym than watching a few gems on your tablet or phone? This month on HBO NOW, you can catch the new Entourage film, a J. Cole concert-documentary, as well as classic like Carrie and Malcolm X.
Here’s what you should be watching on HBO NOW in January…
Mad Max: Fury Road, (1/9)
If you haven’t seen George Miller’s dystopian masterpiece this year, then you’re in for a treat. Mad Max: Fury Road is a take-no-prisoners hell ride through a futuristic desert with some of the best car chases (really, the entire film is a car chase) and stunts you’ll ever see in contemporary cinema. Not only is it one of the best pictures of the year, it’s one of the best action films in recent memory.
Tropic Thunder (Director’s Cut), (1/1)
Tropic Thunder redefined the action-comedy by providing boatloads of laughs mixed in with genuine action set pieces. It also didn’t hurt that it boasted an all-star cast including Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. in an Oscar-nominated performance that stands as one of his best to date.

What can really be said about The Godfather parts 1 & 2 that hasn’t been said already? It’s a mafioso masterpiece that’s as brutal as it is elegant. HBO NOW’s offering has both films edited together in a special edition with additional footage not shown in the standard releases of the films. Just try not to sleep with the fishes before you get a chance to see this.
