Yup, that’s right, Will Smith’s wife is playing one of the main villains on Gotham. Even stranger, Jada Pinkett Smith is going to be playing an original, not based on the comics, character named Fish Mooney. Fish Mooney. This is how Warner Bros. TV is describing Jada’s character…

A hot-headed gangster who manipulates people while posing as a legitimate nightclub owner? Soooo, Jada Pinkett Smith is more or less playing The Penguin. Huh. Except Gotham already has a Penguin who’s being played by skinny, teenage-looking Robin Lord Taylor. Double huh.
Gotham casting has been a mixed bag. Donal Logue as Bullock is spot on, but I’m not feeling Benjamin McKenzie as Gordon, and this Jada Pinkett Smith casting is just…odd. Will the show be the gritty Gotham Central adaptation comic fans have been dreaming of, or a stunt-casting laden Smallville-esque mess? I guess we’ll find out this fall.
