Now that John Krasinski is A Serious Actor, and not the shaggy love interest in The Office [stares at camera], License to Wed [stares at wedding license], and It’s Complicated [stares at “It’s Complicated” Facebook status], he’s only taking Serious Actor roles. And no one screams serious — like, literally screams the word “serious” — than Michael Bay, who sees the world as a playground for fighting robot cars. Krasinski played a Navy SEAL in 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, and he’ll re-team with Bay in Amazon’s Jack Ryan.
Variety reports that Jack Ryan, based on Tom Clancy’s CIA character, was greenlit today for a 10-episode order by Amazon. Krasinki plays the lead role, “an up-and-coming CIA analyst, who is thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. He uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that launches him into the center of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.”
Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland will oversee the series, with Bay attached as an executive producer. His only advice: “I dunno, more explosions?”
Krasinki becomes the fifth actor to portray Jack Ryan, after Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger), Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears), and Chris Pine (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit — I forgot about this movie, too). Everyone should get a chance to play Jack Ryan. By 2018, it’ll inevitably be The Rock’s turn.
