Since John Oliver and the rest of the crew at Last Week Tonight were on vacation over the July 4th weekend, the show host decided to put together a short web special on Sunday night. Titled “Shallow Dives,” the YouTube video takes the show’s popular long segment and flips it on its head.
Usually, we pick a main topic each week and explore it at length. Arguably, in greater detail than anyone needs. Objectively, for a longer period than anyone wants. Tonight, however, instead of taking 15 minutes to do a deep dive into one topic, we’ll be taking one minute to do incredibly shallow dives into 15 different topics.
The 15 topics chosen are all pretty good, but let’s face it — the segment’s best falls to a tie between ostriches (“scary horse birds”) and the conspiracy theory about Al Roker and Lenny Kravitz being cousins. And Oliver’s not kidding about the last one. If you Google it, all kinds of hits will come up, including the time Roker and Kravitz addressed the matter on the TODAY show.
