Kit Harington was nominated for his first Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series Emmy for his performance as Jon Snow during season six of Game of Thrones. It’s a remarkable achievement, considering not too long ago, Harington was known more for his gloomy pouting than talent. Also, he had to pretend to be a corpse for an episode. But it’s a well deserved nomination, if only for his down and dirty work in “The Battle of the Bastards,” and he has a real shot at upsetting Peter Dinklage, who won the category last year.
That’s on-screen, though. Behind the scenes, Harington wasn’t nearly as convincing. No one believed him when he said Jon Snow was dead (even though, technically, he wasn’t lying), especially his co-workers. “It wasn’t one of my proudest moments as an actor,” he told the Wrap, referring to the goodbye speech he gave to the cast and crew. “I wasn’t convincing at all. I didn’t want to do a big speech and start crying, because I knew I’d be seeing these people next year. So I did a bit of a hash job on it, and I could tell a lot of them didn’t buy it.” It was pretty much all of them, except Sophie Turner.
“I don’t know why I chose Sophie, of all people, to deceive the most,” Harington said. “I let her in on the secret last of anyone, really, and she was so sweet. She wrote me a letter about my leaving the show, and she bought that I wouldn’t be coming back… I kind of played tricks on her like an older brother would.”
Jon Snow better watch himself around Sansa next season…
