Back in 2014, we reported that DC cinematic mastermind David S. Goyer was working on Krypton, yet another TV series set in the Superman universe that wouldn’t actually feature superman. In this case, we’d be focusing on Superman’s granddad. Here’s how the show was pitched back in 2014…
“Krypton takes place years before the Superman legend we know, when the House of El was shamed and ostracized. This drama follows the Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known.”
Well, after simmering on low for a while, it looks Krypton is happening, with Syfy officially ordering a pilot. Word is Sleepy Hollow writer Damian Kindler will be revamping David S. Goyer’s original pilot script, and will be showrunner if Krypton goes to series. British director Colm McCarthy, who’s helmed episodes of Doctor Who, Sherlock and Peaky Blinders will handle the pilot. Krypton certainly has some solid talent lined up.
Of course, the question is, will audiences be interested in a show about Superman’s grandpa, set on a planet we all know is doomed? Looking at other superhero prequel series like Gotham and Smallville, the answer is probably yes. These kind of shows may inspire a lot of griping from hardcore fans, but those same fans still seem to tune in, along with large general audiences that don’t really care if Batman or Superman ever show up. Setting the show a couple generations before the Superman mythos should also give Krypton room to be its own thing. We don’t know what the show’s tone will be, but it sounds like it might be a bit of a Kryptonian Game of Thrones, with Superman’s grandpa having to navigate the politics of a war-like society to restore his family’s good name.
What do you think? Interested in visiting Krypton, or would you rather blow the whole thing up?
