Here in the United States, Pakistan-born comedian and uber X-Files fan Kumail Nanjiani is best known for his role as Dinesh Chugtai on HBO’s fantastic Silicon Valley. According to occasional visits from his parents and extended family members, however, Nanjiani is still thought of as a potential medical-school student who can’t afford his own hot meals. That, and per the 38-year-old performer’s other admission on Wednesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, he’s best known as the local adult film supplier.
It all started when talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel asked Nanjiani whether he watched American films and television as a kid. Turns out he did, but with a slight caveat — one that, as Nanjiani put it, his parents would be finding out about after watching the interview:
NANJIANI: I had a friend whose brother had a lot of porn tapes… He wouldn’t let us borrow any of them, so I would steal them. I was the only one of my friends who had two VCRs, and I had a ton of movies, so I would tape my favorite porn scenes in the middle of [other] movies.
KIMMEL: What movies?
NANJIANI: Dad would be like, “Hey let’s watch Roger Rabbit again.” And I’m like, “No! No, the story takes a really hard left turn. The way they play patty cakes is very different.”
Don’t feel too bad for Nanjiani’s adolescent fame-cum-predicament, he swore to Kimmel that his parents never found him out at the time. Besides, the story gifted older male viewers everywhere with a nostalgic sense of pride, and inspired middle and high school kids audiences across the country.
