Jaden Smith’s dad, Will, who was on some show in the 1990s (The Fresh King of Something?), was presented with the highest honor in all of Hollywood at the MTV Movie Awards last night: The MTV Generation Award.
I assume for being Jaden’s father. It’s not easy.
Actually, Smith received the Golden Popcorn for his TV work; his movies, including Suicide Squad; and his music, beginning with 1987’s Rock the House with DJ Jazzy Jeff. He’s been in this business for a long time, and during the ceremony, Smith joked, “When MTV first gave me this Generation Award, I thought it was code for the Old-Ass Dude Award,” later adding, “I’m dedicated to being a light in this world. There’s so much suffering in this world… I just want you to know I am dedicated til I die to light and to love.”
There was a lot of love for Smith at the MTV Movie Awards, particularly from The Lonely Island, Akiva Schaffer, Andy Samberg, and Jorma Taccone, who performed a lively medley of his greatest hits. There’s “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” the Fresh Prince theme song, “Summertime,” “Men in Black,” and “Gettin’ Jiggy wit It.” But where was “Willennium?” MTV’s probably waiting for the dawn of the “Jadennium” to bring that one back.
