There was a time when Netflix seemed unstoppable when it came to their own, exclusive programming. They were responsible for House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and helping Arrested Development to rise from the ashes of a disappointing cancellation, but when Marco Polo was released, it seemed like their hot streak (minus Hemlock Grove) may have come to an end. The slick production, cinematography, and mature content was great, but if the show itself wasn’t that great, who cares? The first season of Marco Polo was really an awesome concept that sort of fell flat for a lot of people.
Yet Netflix insists on giving the show another shot and, really, that doesn’t seem like a bad idea. The concept of following the real-life Dothraki, the Mongolians, under the rule of Kublai Khan seems like a can’t-miss concept; just a few tweaks to the first season could have made it can’t-miss television. Set to debut on July 1st, the second season of Marco Polo looks to pick up the pieces where the first season left off with Khan looking to overreach his power to become the ruler of the known world, while Marco is the stranger-in-a-strange-land just trying to make everyone happy.
But there looks to be a ton of action in this upcoming season, with war erupting everywhere while Khan tries to crush everyone in his way. This upcoming season looks like it might take a great concept and production and finally take it to the next level. Are you ready to give Marco Polo another shot?
