Is it you? Did you want to see Matthew Perry from Friends play Ted Kennedy? What a weirdly specific thing to hope for. But in any event, guess what: Matthew Perry is going to play Ted Kennedy! You did it!
The specifics, via TV Line, are as follows: Reelz is making a follow-up to its 2011 miniseries The Kennedys, which starred Greg Kinnear as John F. Kennedy and Katie Holmes as Jackie. The new series, titled The Kennedys — After Camelot, will be a look at Ted in the aftermath of the assassinations of his two older brothers, John and Bobby. Holmes is back, this time with the Onassis tacked onto her character’s name, and Perry will executive produce, as well as star in the four-hour miniseries, which is set for a spring 2017 premiere.
What this news means, in addition to the fact that we are approximately one year from hearing Matthew Perry do his best “er, uh, chowdah” Kennedy/Quimby impression, is that we have quietly entered the golden era of former Friends stars playing iconic real-life people in cable series. First Schwimmer landed the “Juice-y” (I’m sorry) role of O.J. confidant and Kardashian patriarch Robert Kardashian on American Crime Story, now this. What’s next? Matt LeBlanc as Ronald Reagan on The Americans? Jennifer Aniston as a young Ruth Bader Ginsburg? Gunther as Charles Manson? Too soon to rule any of it out.
