Earlier this year, after the the SNL 40 celebration, Norm Macdonald revealed on Twitter that they had hoped to have Eddie Murphy come on “Celebrity Jeopardy” as Bill Cosby in a multicolored sweater mixing drinks. Murphy obviously declined. However, after Macdonald revealed their scuttled plans for Murphy, Seth Meyers — while expressing admiration for Norm Macdonald — told Howard Stern that he wouldn’t have told that story.
“I wouldn’t have told it,” he said. “When you’re at SNL, you’re seeing so many different things behind the scenes, and I get that the world wants to hear what’s going on back there, but you don’t want to draw back the curtain.”
He added that, “Norm played it in a way that is very Norm Macdonald.”
Earlier this week, in an interview with HuffPost Live, Norm Macdonald — a new judge on Last Comic Standing — learned for the first time, apparently, of Seth Meyers’ reaction to him telling the story. During the segment, when asked how he decides what to share with the public, a groggy Norm Macdonald sarcastically responded:
I always think, ‘What would Seth Meyers do?'” Macdonald said. “Because if you really want to be really funny, then that’s what you want to do. You want to think, ‘What would make Seth Meyers laugh?’ That’s how I live my life.”
Asked what he thought of Seth Meyers’ show, Macdonald added, “Uh, it’s not something I would do.”
How’s that for a very Norm Macdonald response, Meyers?
