If you’re one of the devotees of the cult CBS thriller Person of Interest, we have some mixed news to drop off at your doorstep. Let’s lead with the good news. You’ll be back to hanging out with Finch, Reese, and Root for a 13-episode season five run starting in May. The bad news? It’ll be the last go-around for the Jonathan Nolan-created series. Essentially, this gives you clearance to guzzle a drink to celebrate and chase that with another to lament the show’s future loss.
Not unlike how Parks and Recreation blazed through its final episodes at a ridiculously fast pace, the end season of POI will kick off on May 3 with the series finale arriving on June 21. The tight squeeze between premiere and finale is helped along by CBS electing to air the show on both Mondays and Tuesdays for the majority of its closing run.
Executive producer J.J. Abrams didn’t shy away from the likelihood of the series being canceled when he spoke at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in January.
“My guess is it is the final season,” Abrams said. “The only heartbreak there is how much good story there was to come if it were to have continued. Jonah [Nolan] and Greg Plageman have done such an amazing job on that show. I know what these episodes are that they’re done wrapping it up. We don’t yet have a schedule. But I know they will see the light of day…people will get to see these episodes. I know the power of that story. Again, to have a show that goes on as many years as that has, it’s very hard to complain. It’s a miracle to get a show on the air and to have it last that long is something that we should just be grateful for. But I do love that show and I would’ve loved to see that continue.”
Even optimistic fans could see the likelihood of the plug being pulled when POI cast member Sarah Shahi was tapped to star in the new Nancy Drew small screen offering. That said, you could certainly do worse than have five seasons of a show you like exist on network television.
Executive producers Nolan and Greg Plageman offered up their thanks to fans in a statement to IGN:
“We’re extremely excited to be able share this final season with the fans. We’re eternally grateful to our amazing cast and crew, as well as our partners at the studio and network. Most of all, we want to thank the show’s fans — the best fans in the world. This subversive little paranoia-inducing cyberpunk-thriller is for you and would not have been possible without your support. As life has come to imitate Person of Interest, it’s been our great privilege to work on show for the past five seasons. We can’t wait for you to experience this thrilling and final chapter.”
Let’s see what they have in store for an exit come May and June.
