For better or worse, the first season of AMC’s Preacher adaptation did two things drastically different from its comic book source material. First, co-creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg used the first 10 episodes to offer viewers a prequel of sorts to the main story told by Steve Dillon and Garth Ennis in the comics. And second? Aside from a few rough first meetings with the angels Fiore (Tom Brooke) and DeBlanc (Anatol Yusef) and a crazed cattle baron, Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) and his pals didn’t really face off with a main villain. The whole thing was all about Jesse discovering his newfound power.
With the Cowboy’s (Graham McTavish) explosive new assignment in the season finale’s final moments, however, audiences now know Jess, Tulip (Ruth Negga) and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) will have to face off with an otherworldly force hellbent on killing the titular preacher. And if that’s not enough, the latest trailer for season two offers fans their first full glimpse of a figure faintly seen walking out of the 4th Annual Houston Snuff Film Festival last year. Or at least that’s the assumption since the actor Pip Torrens, whose casting was announced in March, looks an awful lot like Herr Starr.
Those familiar with Dillon and Ennis’ comics will recognize Star as an operative of The Grail, an organization that tasks itself with protecting the Messiah’s bloodline on earth. Though references were made to “Grail Industries” in the season one finale, how Rogen, Goldberg and showrunner Sam Catlin chose to adapt the character for the show remains to be seen. At least the new trailer, titled “A Road Trip to Find God,” confirms that Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy’s mission is to find God on earth — or wherever the prick is hiding — and “kick his ass.” All while avoiding the Terminator-like Cowboy while traveling through New Orleans.
