Making A Murderer made Steven Avery a sympathetic figure to many, but it seems to be a different story inside prison walls. Prison documents from Waupun Correction Institution reveal that Avery is not a model neighbor, seeming to push to his cellmate Jason Thomaschaske to his limits several times in September 2015:
Thomaschaske wrote to prison leaders that Avery was “disrespectful, a disgusting human being, he never leaves his cell.”
He said, “I want to kill this guy.” Supervisors say they did not take this as a threat but as frustration.
According to the documents, Avery was “intentionally doing things to incite” his cellmate. Avery told Thomaschaske, “Go ahead and do something, then I can sue WCI for not protecting me.”
Steven Avery’s brother Earl also appears in the prison documents, having contacted officials about receiving threatening letters from Avery in reference to beliefs that Earl was involved in the crime that put him behind bars.
Also feeling the effects of the details we saw in Making A Murderer are the guards at the facilities holding Avery and Brendan Dassey. Many are reported in the documents back in 2007 as having a conflict of interest, either knowing Teresa Halbach away from the prison or being related to someone involved in the investigation. One went as far to say he might not be able to treat Dassey “fairly” due to the details of incarceration.
