Riverdale is a ridiculous show. And I mean that as a compliment. It has all the drama of soap opera — mysterious murders, secret babies, star-crossed lovers, street gangs — juxtaposed against a warped candy-colored 1950s Americana. The main thrust of the first season has been to figure out who murdered Jason Blossom, male heir to the Blossom fortune and maple syrup empire (yes, seriously). But along the way, side plots ranging from serious to silly have cropped up to draw out the reveal. The interconnected web that is weaved in small towns means everyone knows everyone else and the same skeletons tend to be in several closets. But just because the adults are embroiled in Machiavellian construction espionage doesn’t mean there isn’t time for the girls to engage in that age-old tradition: the dance-off!
The plot of the episode, “The Lost Weekend,” gives us exactly zero clues as to why this happening.
When Fred (Luke Perry) decides to finalize the divorce with Archie’s mother Mary (guest star Molly Ringwald), Archie (KJ Apa) hides his true feelings. Archie tries to win Valerie (guest star Hayley Law) back with a romantic evening, however, Betty (Lili Reinhart) hijacks his plans when she decides to throw Jughead (Cole Sprouse) a surprise birthday party. Once Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) learns of the party, she decides to make it interesting and things quickly get out of control. Meanwhile, Veronica (Camila Mendes) contemplates whether she should participate in the deposition to help get her Dad released.
Luckily, the description beneath the full dance-off teaser gives us a clue. On top of everything else “The Lost Weekend” episode is preparing for the homecoming dance. But who knows. The dance-off could be more jockeying for Queen Bee status among the high school elite. Or perhaps the proper wiggling of hips will reveal a secret compartment in the gym housing the smoking gun that points to Jason’s killer. Not gonna lie, I kind of want it to be that third one.
Actress Madelaine Petsch also gave fans a sneak peek at her dance-off rehearsal with Camila Mendes in preparation for this Thursday’s episode. Which girl has your vote?
