She’s back, bitches! Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed on Instagram Thursday that she will indeed be reprising her role as the diabolical Kathryn Merteuil in NBC’s spin-off Cruel Intentions, with this throwback pic announcing the start of production. The news comes just a few weeks after it was reported that Gellar had been approached about the series, which would follow her “beautiful and cunning” character 15 years after the events in the 1999 film.
This time around, her sights will be set on Bash Casey (Taylor John Smith), the son of her late stepbrother Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) and Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon) from the original film, as she vies for control of Valmont International. Bash, on the other hand, will come across his dead father’s journal and discover a whole new world of “sex, money, power and corruption.” Not too much sex, hopefully, if he’s only supposed to be 15 years old, but it’s likely they’re playing fast and loose with the time frame.
Gellar hasn’t had the best luck in television since Buffy the Vampire Slayer went off the air in 2003, starring in the short-lived Ringer in 2011 and The Crazy Ones in 2013. But with more salacious-style dramas dominating network TV lately such as Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and Empire, it only makes sense that a Cruel Intentions spin-off would be a natural fit, should the pilot get picked up to series.
