Fox appears to be quite happy to continue its relationship with Seth MacFarlane. Not only will the network be picking up another one of the divisive Family Guy creator’s small screen offerings, but his mug will be front and center, too.
Deadline reports that Fox has given a 13-episode straight-to-series order for MacFarlane’s new untitled TV project. The program will be an hour-long live action dramedy set in space with MacFarlane serving as one of the stars. That description sorta makes it sound like a spin-off of the time Jeff and Sinbad fought to escape a space mall on American Dad, but it’s not, so let’s not dwell on that too much. Let’s look at the description Deadline has provided for the series:
“Set 300 years in the future, the show follows the adventures of the Orville, a not-so-top-of-the-line exploratory ship in Earth’s interstellar Fleet. Facing cosmic challenges from without and within, this motley crew of space explorers will boldly go where no comedic drama has gone before.”
Cosmic challenges are always the most difficult challenges, aren’t they? Will they be solved with crooning? Who’s to say?
“I’ve wanted to do something like this show ever since I was a kid, and the timing finally feels right,” shared the 42-year-old former Oscar host.
Although his TV output as a creator/producer has been most visible in the animated realm, MacFarlane has churned out a few live action shows at Fox already. He exec produced the quickly shelved sitcoms The Winner (Rob Corddry was in that one) and Dads, and he helped revive the short-lived new era of the science-focused documentary series Cosmos. This new project is expected to arrive sometime in the 2017-18 season.
