I’ve been reading comics since I was a wee lad, and nothing is as grotesque, perverse, brilliant, and compelling as Garth Ennis’ Preacher. It’s just perfect. (As is his Just a Pilgrim, but that’s for another convo.)
So, I was not dismayed when it was announced that AMC would be adapting the material; they’ve done a superb job with The Walking Dead. Since the announcement, we’ve been receiving tidbits of info about the castings but now we can confirm the man playing the titular character, Jesse Custer. His name is Dominic Cooper. He’s been attached to the project for a little while, but we weren’t quite positive (it has been heavily rumored) as to who he would be playing; it’s official now. Seth Rogen tweeted this info earlier today:
We have Jesse Custer! @dominiccoop is gonna save our souls. #Preacher

Cooper was captivating in The Devil’s Double, and I have no qualms with him representing the preacher with the “word of God” power. The real stretch is how AMC and Seth Rogen will represent that power and the humor of the comics in a piece that is so dark, it stretches the boundaries of the genre. Seriously… how are they going to portray Arseface?
Another question I have is how they’ll show us the Until End of the World storyline; it’s one of the best Romeo and Juliet stories I’ve ever devoured, in film or literature. So many questions… we’ll just have to see.
