Aidy Bryant had one simple request on last night’s edition of SNL and it’s pretty reasonable one: Maybe men could look into being a bit more “dece” when it comes to institutional sexism. Y’know, if it’s not too much of a hassle or anything.
Bryant popped by the Weekend Update desk to provide her perspective on the massive reshoot pay disparity between Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams when it came to deSpaceying All the Money in the World. In a smart, scathing and painfully true bit of commentary, Bryant laid out how women carry the burden of always being expected to be pleasant and obliging even when its in the exact opposite of their best interests.
“I, like most girls, have been taught to be accommodating and be polite,” she noted. “Like once, I felt bad about telling an Uber driver that he took a wrong turn, and so I just went with him to New Jersey.”
Weekend Update co-host Colin Jost asked his guest how she felt about Wahlberg’s statement declaring his plan to donate his $1.5 million reshoot pay to Time’s Up. That’s when Bryant said what needed to be said.
“That’s great. That’s the right thing to do,” said Bryant. “But it would be so cool if it didn’t take a week-long public shaming to do the right thing,” Maybe do a daily private shaming, which is what I have done my entire damn life.”
To give a further nudge for men to look into self-improvement, Bryant offered up some profound words of wisdom from a cinematic classic…
“To quote Cade Yeager, Mark Wahlberg’s character from Transformers,” began Bryant. “You gotta have faith, Prime, in who we can be. See, Colin, we can all be Transformers!”
The entire thing’s fanastic. Close that tab about your will-making kit and give ‘er a gander.
