It hasn’t been that long since the last new episode of SNL, but Margot Robbie and Kate McKinnon’s lives are radically different than they were on May 21. Robbie starred in The Legend of Tarzan and Suicide Squad (both of which made over $350 million at the worldwide box office), and her Harley Quinn is getting a spinoff film; McKinnon, meanwhile, won an Emmy and destroyed the childhoods of millions of man-babies in Ghostbusters. Also, she’s the best, but everyone already knew that. Now that they’re both big stars, they have so much to talk about, like the whereabouts of a loose raccoon in Studio 8H.
Robbie makes her SNL hosting debut during this weekend’s premiere, and to relax before the big night, McKinnon invited her to the “pre-premiere pre-party.” (Sorry, Lin-Manuel Miranda.) This place has everything: wine, flashing lights, terrible music. Robbie ends up getting a little too crazy, kind of like the damaged Joker in Suicide Squad, and now I hope McKinnon plays Jared Leto on SNL. The role probably would have gone to Taran Killam, but he, along with Jay Pharoah and Jon Rudnitsky, was “let go.” Other season 42 changes include Michael Che, Pete Davidson, and Leslie Jones being upgraded to repertory players; Mikey Day, Alex Moffat, and Melissa Villaseñor joining the cast; and that raccoon giving everyone rabies. It’s going to be a long season.
