Everyone and their mother watched Netflix’s latest smash hit, Stranger Things, and while we wait for official word on the show’s still unannounced second season, theories are starting to spring up all over the place regarding the Upside Down, the true nature of Eleven, and what the hell is happening to poor Will.
Matt and Ross Duffer, writers and creators of the show, are here for you in this time of emotional hand wringing. The brothers recently sat down with IGN and shed a l little bit of light on the fates of two pivotal characters. Both Barb (Shannon Purser) and Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine) seemingly met their ends over the course of the show’s eight episodes, and in Barb’s case, her exit sounds pretty permanent according to Matt Duffer.
“Barb will not be forgotten. We’ll make sure there’s some justice for Barb. People get very frustrated, understandably, that the town doesn’t seem to be really dealing with Barb. That stuff is all happening. We’re just not spending any screen time on it. It’s not like her parents are like ‘Oh Barb left. She died!’ Season One actually takes place over the course of six or seven days – it’s a really short period of time. So part of what we want to do with hypothetical Season 2 is to explore the repercussions of everything that happened.”
However, fans of Modine’s menacing head of Hawkins Lab have much better news. While it looked like the monster finished Brenner off, the Duffers hint that he could reappear.
“I would say that if we were going to kill Brenner… as an audience member watching the show, if that was his death, that would be very unsatisfying to me – when the monster jumps on him and we cut away. He would deserve much more than that as an ending. So yes, there’s a possibility of seeing him again.”
C’mon, Netflix. Make it happen.
