You’re never going to make everyone happy when you hand out awards. Someone will always feel slighted, and get upset about how a thing they love was disrespected or snubbed. But if you’re dead set on doing it anyway, you can’t do much better than the Critics’ Choice TV Awards did this year.
– Awards for The Americans, Silicon Valley, and Archer? Check.
– Awards for Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Taraji P. Henson, Allison Janney (seen above locking lips with James Corden), Amy Schumer, Jeffrey Tambor, and the newly re-mustached Sam Elliott, among others? Check.
– Giving T.J. Miller a trophy and letting him spew chaos in front of a live television? Check.
Again, can you quibble here? Of course. Unless there was some sort of calendar-related issue I’m unaware of, the total omission of Parks and Recreation is disturbing. And I would have been okay with, well, pretty much anyone in the Best Actress in Comedy Series category. (No slight to the winner, Amy Schumer. I’m just saying the category was deep enough that any of the nominees would have been a deserving and defensible winner.) But the important thing here is that no winner jumps out as a horrifying miscarriage of justice. That sounds like a low bar for an awards show to clear, but, man, history has proven that it’s all we can hope for, usually.
