Over the past few years, The Simpsons have let several guest animators take a crack at the show’s iconic opening sequence and couch gag, starting in 2010 with Banksy, then John Kricfalusi, Bill Plympton, the Robot Chicken guys, Guillermo del Toro, Don Hertzfeldt, and most recently, a May 2015 cameo by Rick and Morty. Now a French illustrator and animator named Yoann Hervo has taken it upon himself to give opening credits a go, and the result is a fantastically weird and trippy glimpse into some sort of early ’90s Simpsons VHS bizarro world.
Hervo writes on YouTube that the project was originally supposed to be a collaboration between several animators to “produce, in their own style, a short story in the Simpsons universe.” Unfortunately the project never came to fruition, but Hervo at least wanted to do what he set out to accomplish, and this opening sequence is the result. Given how the show has been so creatively open to sharing the spotlight with other artists, I would not be all that surprised to see this appear before an upcoming episode.
My only question is: Where’s the couch gag? Once the family rushes into the house, they seem to disappear into thin air and the couch remains noticeably, and perhaps ominously, unsat on.
