After months of racist, misogynistic controversy and trying to figure out how Mike Scully could go from “Lisa on Ice” to offhand “Orientals” gags, Dads finally premiered on Fox last night, in front of the already far superior Brooklyn Nine-Nine, as well New Girl and The Mindy Project. So, Dads and not New Girl star Brenda Strong, I’ve got to ask: what did you think of the show? Was it worth all the online ink? Would you recommend setting a Season Pass?
C’mon, it wasn’t THAT bad.
OK, it was SO that bad, like the Japanese Sailor Moon outfit for the Chinese investors…
…and the multiple tiny penis jokes…
…and Seth Green’s Asian schoolgirl giggle…
…and the guffawing studio audience that was carted over from a Miller-Boyett Production from 1993…
…and the writers mistaking “shocking,” ironically racist, undeveloped punchlines for good jokes…
…and the stereotypes being not so much offensive as they were tired (Latin maid gags?)…
…and watching Martin Mull and Peter Riegert slum far below their abilities…
…and remembering this used to be the far superior Raising Hope‘s timeslot, before it got moved to Friday…
…but don’t worry, Brenda Song, things could have been much worse: in the original pilot, you actually sleep with one of the businessmen and say, “Let’s just say I wrecked him in the bedroom like a panda wrecks bamboo if a panda was having crazy sex with bamboo.” And then one of the BROS calls you the resident “ching chong.” See? All things considered, this was the better of the two pilots. Do you have anything to say about that?
Thought so. Dads can’t be gone soon enough.
