Low Winter Sun is AMC’s attempt to somehow, someway fill the crater in our souls left by the departing Breaking Bad, which has only 8 episodes remaining. Suitably enough, Low Winter Sun will premiere after Breaking Bad on August 11th. The time slot, and AMC’s pedigree (Mad Men, The Walking Dead) ought to be enough to entice most of us into at least giving the pilot a shot, although you’d be hard pressed to find that many people who know much about the new series. Unfortunately, any promotion that it is currently getting is both overshadowed by Breaking Bad and appearing during commercial breaks of The Killing, which is not exactly AMC’s most watched program.
So, what is Low Winter Sun about?
Based on a two-hour British series starring Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes, Kick-Ass), who will be reprising his role in the American series, Low Winter Sun comes from Chris Mundy, a rock journalist at the Rolling Stone during the grunge heyday (he has since become a writer/producer on Hell on Wheels and Criminal Minds). There’s a huge cast of characters in Low Winter Sun, but at the center is the same story that anchored the original miniseries: Frank Agnew (Strong), who is not necessarily a bad guy, ends up shooting a fellow officer.
Set in Detroit, the series basically follows what transpires from there: He’s a guy who thinks he got away with murder, but his actions put into motion other forces, and he is left with a bunch of lousy options trying to stay ahead of the facts. It is not a procedural. It is not a serial killer drama, and it is not a mystery. Similar to Breaking Bad, it’s about a guy dealing with consequences.
